Nokia in a race against android - I don't like it

Stephen Elop , CEO of Nokia inc today announced at the Mobile World Congress that the primary aim of Nokia in the near future will be to overthrow android from its current top position in the smart phone market. It means that nokia is not going to adopt android platform at least in the near future.
Thats sad, at least for me. I love both of them. I would love to see an android core in a nokia hardware. Anyway that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

I bought my first nokia phone 7yrs ago, a 1108. The phone is a successor of the most celling mobile phone ever - nokia 1100. The phone is quite a  strudy one. Till now it is working in perfect condition, though not my primary one, even after numerous and throws to wall(Yeah you read it right) and falls and change of cover 6 times. I mean I love the Nokia hardware.

when it comes to the operating systems I am basically an open source fan. Open source platform generally and Android in particular is evolving fast. Android is more feature rich than many other platforms. It now has an amazingly powerful and feature rich OS.

The main say Elop has against the Andoid platform is that if Nokia were to adopt the android platform, they would have difficulty in differentiating as the android tree is already a large one. Nokia have a fear of not being able to stand out from the crowd and make a mark of their own. He once even hinted that nokia's hardware innovation cannot put to use the android platform fully and that's why they adopted Windows Phone Platform.

But i believe Nokia is way ahead of many others in terms of hardware innovation.only thing thats limiting them is the software they use. For Eg.  The largest resolution available in any Nokia phones is 640 x 360 which they say is a fault of the symbian operating system. When 800 x 480 phones are looming in the market Nokia don't stand a chance. I think Symbian, once considered as a promise to the smartphone industry have lead them to a blind end.

Last week I heard that nokia R & D is spending the largest amount in the entire mobile industry. But the results are no way near good or even satisfactory. I think thats why nokia decided to handover the software department to Microsoft.

For Microsoft this is a great opportunity to improve as their WP 7 is only at an infant stage. They think Nokia deal will get the WP 7 to its mature stage.

I don't know what would be the result of this alliance but at least Microsoft should benefit from it.
