The default GPRS setting that is downloaded from the BSNL site does not work on some Nokia Mobile phones. All the complaints I heard was about Symbian series 40 phones I found out a solution for this and am sharing with you so that it may be useful for you.
The problem lies in the default access point settings. BSNL says the access point is gprssouth.cellone.in but actually it isn't.
Actual access point is bsnlnet. You won't be able to change anything for the already downloaded settings so you have to create another access point.
How to create a new access point?
Go to Main Menu>> settings>>configuration>>
here you can see the settings used for connecting to the GPRS network.
Scroll down and select Personal config setting.
Add an new setting, remember it is an access point you are creating so select 'access point' as type
Name it any thing you want(Keep 'BSNL' away from the name to avoid confusion later)
Go to 'Access point settings. Select 'packet data as data bearer.
Go to Bearer settings and give following settings
Packet data access point - bsnlnet
Network type - IPv4 or IPv6( Both worked for me)
Authentication type - Normal
Username - Your Mobile No without 9 or 91
Password - Your Mobile No without 9 or 91
Select preferred access point. You will see a list of access points(now you might realize why I asked you to avoid BSNL from the name of new access point).
Select the access point you previously created.
Now go back to any app other than the default browser and try to connect to internet. You should be fine now.
In some cases you might need any or all of these modifications - 1 . Change the Network type (IPv4 to IPv6 or wise versa)
2. Change the default configuration setting( Find it in Main Menu>> settings>>configuration>>) to bsnlnet.
